The Enterobacteriaceae Subcommittee is one of seven established as of 1 January 1950 under the authority of the International Association of Microbiologists by the International Committee on Bacteriological Nomenclature to study the problems of taxonomy of several groups of microorganisms [Breed, R. S. & Cowan, S. T. (1951). The Subcommittees of the International Committees on Bacteriological Nomenclature. Int Bull Bacteriol Nomencl Taxon 1, 45-46]. The first official meeting of the Subcommittee was held on Saturday 19 August 1950 at 3.00 p.m. in Rio de Janeiro on the occasion of the Fifth International Congress for Microbiology, 17-24 August 1950. The eight attendees were F. Kauffmann (Chairman), R. E. Buchanan (by invitation), S. T. Cowan (representing J. S. K. Boyd), P. R. Edwards, E. Hormaeche, G. Olin, G. S. Wilson (representing J. Taylor) and R. St. John-Brooks (Secretary). There was in existence at this time a British Bacteriaceae Subcommittee, which also at one stage used the name Enterobacteriaceae Subcommittee; it is mentioned above as the British members of the international subcommittee were subsequently drawn from this group. The history of what has become the ICSP Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Enterobacteriaceae, however, can be traced back still further, to the Salmonella Subcommittee established in 1933 under the chairmanship of H. Schuetze. The year 1958 was considered the 25th anniversary of the Enterobacteriaceae Subcommittee, so a historical review of the Subcommittee was appended to the minutes of the meeting held in Stockholm in 1958. On this basis, the meeting of the Subcommittee in 2008 marked its 75th anniversary. | |
