History of the Subcommittee

During the IUMS Congress held in Sydney, Australia, in August 1999, Dr Antonio Ventosa proposed to the ICSP the establishment of a new Subcommittee on the taxonomy of the Halomonadaceae, on the basis of the necessity to establish criteria for a correct classification of the large number of species of the genera included in this family and to propose minimal standards for the description of new taxa within the Halomonadaceae. After approval by the ICSP, the inaugural meeting of the Subcommittee was held in Paris, France, in 2002, with 10 members, including A. Ventosa (as acting chairman) and R. H. Vreeland (as acting secretary). A new member of the Subcommittee, Dr V. Bejar, was elected at the meeting in San Francisco in 2005.
